In the early hours of Sunday morning, the UFC will hold its biggest event of the year so far.

Headlining the promotion’s fourth pay-per-view card of the year is the lightweight title fight between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Al Iaquinta.

UFC 223 was supposed to see Nurmagomedov take on Tony Ferguson, but the interim lightweight champion was forced off the card due to a knee injury.

The winner of Holloway vs Nurmagomedov is expected to be crowned the undisputed 155lbs champion, a title which is currently held by Conor McGregor.

Featherweight champion Max Holloway was drafted in on to take on Nurmagomedov but was deemed medically unfit to compete.

On Friday, April 6, the UFC touched down in Brooklyn, New York to bring fight fans the UFC 223 ceremonial weigh-ins, featuring a lightweight title fight between Max Holloway vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov… except Holloway wasn’t cleared to fight and Anthony Pettis stepped into his place. We could not make this stuff up.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is roughly 24 hours away from its UFC 223: “Khabib vs. Iaquinta“ mixed martial arts (MMA) event on pay-per-view (PPV), locked and loaded for this Saturday night (April 7, 2018) inside Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – MMAjunkie was on scene and reporting live from today’s early and official UFC 223 fighter weigh-ins. The festivities were eventful to say the least.

The event was originally supposed to be headlined by Khabib Nurmagomedov (25-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) vs. Max Holloway (19-3 MMA, 15-3 UFC). However in the midst of the weigh-in window news broke UFC featherweight champ Holloway had been deemed medically unfit to compete on the card by the New York State Athletic Commission.

Immediately thereafter a mad scramble ensued to find a replacement. Former UFC titleholder Anthony Pettis (20-7 MMA, 7-6 UFC) offered his services after his bout with Michael Chiesa was scratched from the card Thursday. However, “Showtime” could only make 155.2 on his first attempt, and then did not weigh in a second time.

In a surprise twist, Paul Felder (15-3 MMA, 7-3 UFC) offered his services to step in to fight Nurmagomedov for the 155-pound belt. However, the NYSAC would not approve the fight because Felder is “not ranked.” Felder is scheduled to open the main card against Al Iaquinta (13-3-1 MMA, 8-2 UFC).

UFC 223’s co-main event of the evening features another title fight, which comes in the shape of a strawweight championship bout between champion Rose Namajunas and Joanna Jedrzejczyk.

Former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis is also on the card, locking horns with Al Iaquinta.

UFC 223 is without a doubt the most stacked card of 2018, making it a must watch for casual and avid mixed martial arts fans.

As of right now, we have no word on if Nurmagomedov will fight, and who.

Nurmagomedov (25-0) is coming off a dominant decision victory over Edson Barboza in the co-main event of UFC 219 in December. This performance not only extended Nurmagomedov’s win streak to nine straight under the UFC banner but also marked his first appearance inside the Octagon since his submission win over Michael Johnson at UFC 205 in November 2016.

Holloway was filling in for the injured Tony Ferguson on six days notice, but was unable to be cleared by the NY Athletic Commission and was barred from the fight. Luckily Pettis was in the wings to swoop in after his previously scheduled fight with Michael Chiesa was scrapped due to an injury sustained during the Conor McGregor bus attack on Thursday.

Also featured on the card is a women’s strawweight title fight rematch between reigning champion Rose Namajunas and former champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk.

Namajunas (7-3) earned his title with a shocking first round knockout over Jedrzejczyk at UFC 217 in November. This performance not only handed Jedrzejczyk her first professional loss but also marked Nanajunas’ sixth career stoppage win.

Prior to the chaos, UFC strawweight champ Rose Namajunas (7-3 MMA, 5-3 UFC) and former champ Joanna Jedrzejczyk (14-1 MMA, 8-1 UFC) made weight for their rematch without issue.

The early weigh-ins took place at the UFC host hotel in Brooklyn, N.Y., and precede the ceremonial weigh-ins for the fans, which take place at 6 p.m. ET at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The same venue hosts Saturday’s event, which has a main card on pay-per-view following prelims on FS1 and UFC Fight Pass.
